In my daily practice, I always use heavy bokkens, with a minimum of 800 grams, with the exception of suburito for tanren uchi and other exercises. Upon receiving this specimen, at first it seemed to be lighter than requested. I went to weigh it and it weighed exactly 800 grams! Fantastic!

The reason for not feeling the weight was clear: its balance was perfect. With impressive balance and finish, I was very happy with this weapon. In addition, our practice involves a lot of contact because of the awase, kumitachi and kentaijo practices. After practicing several times over the days, I noticed that the wood suffered very little, which leads me to believe that it is a suitable wood for daily and hard practice.

The jo is also absolutely spectacular, with the ideal weight, thickness and size, and also managed to pass days of hard practice tests without any "suffering" being noticed.
These are truly high quality weapons, as well as being true works of art, of obvious beauty.

I got my bokken home, I knew it was going to be special,
but I wasn't prepared for what was to come...

Over the past few months I had talked a lot about
what martial arts practice should be like,
how budo should be taken.
The seriousness with which you should enter a dojo,
step on the tatami, wear the keikogi, respect tradition,
our masters, the learning, the path...

Well... I wanted to go through this journey with the best
weapon I could find... but it was the weapon that found me!
It surprised me in every measure, it is dense, resistant,
heavy as I asked for, not too heavy, it's elegant, the wood is
wood is exuberant, balanced, perfect...

João Sabugueiro put a piece of my soul there,
It has your fingerprint, I know that every time I handle a weapon
I'll know who made it, where it came from...

This bokken is incomparably better than anything I have ever seen and trained.
My bokken has a piece of me in it.

Thank you João

I asked João to create a slightly oversize IPE wood bokken and he delivered. The IPE wood is already a very dense wood compared to a traditional oak but when you make it slightly oversize this creates a unique bokken that you need to approach carefully. As a result, it took me several days of practice with it before I could even consider starting to describe it.

I have to say, João is a true artisan. My bokken was carefully crafted with an amazing build quality and attention to detail. You do not approach this oversize bokken lightly but with extreme care. Its weight is significant. Even if you have strength and a strong build, I guarantee that are going to feel this bokken after some long series of suburi. However, when you need to cut through, then it provides a fantastic feeling with a strong presence.

It doesn't budge when you cross bokken vividly with your partner. I often tried to look for any bumps after some strong contacts, but I never saw any. This is very impressive. The IPE wood is so dense it is difficult to alter it. I look forward to keeping regular practice with this bokken as well as with the jo that was built for me with the same care.

The bokken set that João made for me is absolutely, a work of art. The superb craftsmanship was evident the second I took them out of their cases and held them.

The wood itself is of exceptional quality and João mentioned it was wood that he had been holding for many years.
Beautiful grain and colour, amazingly perfect lines and balance.

Both pieces (daito and shoto) have an amazing feel in the hands and are truly inspiring weapons for my kendo kata and suburi practice.

My experience with João has been excellent from the initial conversations through to delivery of the finished bokken.
I would highly recommend Almarez Buki to other martial artists looking for the perfect bokken.

As the founder of Seido, a great amateur of craftsmanship and especially woodwork, I've had many opportunities to see and work with various weapons.

Although we're the only company working with all Japanese craftsman simultaneously, it still wasn't enough for me, so I've started a quest: find all good weapons craftsmen in the world.

And I must say, João is one of the very few I was able to discover.

What I like the most in his work is that he has a very rare approach: craftsmanship as a Budo practitioner.

His work make me think about one of Miyamoto Musashi's quote, in which he explains that craftsmanship as an art is very much like martial practice as as art:

- Like a soldier, the carpenter sharpens his own tools. [...] When the carpenter becomes skilled, he works efficiently and according to correct measures. When he has developed practical knowledge of all the skills of the craft, he can become a foreman himself.

I've always believed that craftsmanship can be a very good way of polishing one's human and martial skills, and João proved me right with his work.
Showing his work to Japanese craftsmen was also a very good way to show them that craftsmanship is something that defines us as human, beyond borders and cultures, exactly like Budo and Aikido practice.

I am really happy with the weapons I have received from João, they fit perfectly my occasional Tanren work, and they do fit very well in my collection, helping me to remember why I do the work I do on a daily basis.

I wish him the best in his quest of perfection.

I want to start by thanking João Sabugueiro for the mastery shown in the construction of Bo.

The first day I had the opportunity to use the Bo in my personal training, gave me the feeling of total balance and harmony, it was easy to become an extension of my body.

In Okinawa Kobudo the weapon is the reason for our evolution and the more perfect it is, the more demanding it becomes, it is in it that our Art resides.

Thank you for giving me the privilege of being able to use a weapon built by Almarez Buki.

Dear João Sabugueiro
It's a beautiful "wooden weapon".

It's only possible to make a piece of this nature
with a lot of Willpower, Ingenuity and Art

Art is a complex feeling... that, in this case, goes from Root to Form, from Symmetry to Balance and finally arrives to Effectiveness in Gesture.

I emphasize:
- the wood appropriate to the function.
- the design suitable for the job.
- the consensual dimension.
- the specific balance.
- the premium finish.
- the feeling that permeates it... that of João Sabugueiro.

As you know, I am a passionate wood apprentice... so I know that when you give a craftsman a "wooden gun" made by you, along with it goes a little bit of "João".
I imagine you feel "stolen" at that moment .

That's why, my dear João, I want, as far as possible, to reassure you, because I'll do everything I can to work hard on it in the hope that one day it will accept me and that it will belong to both of us.

Thank you
Hug

Dear friend João.

I am grateful for the privilege of being able to practice with Almarez Buki weapons.

Without pretending to make an analysis, I allow myself to highlight one of the many unique characteristics that can define them: balance.

This is transmitted by the immediate connectivity with the practitioner, in fact they are superbly balanced weapons.

All the best.
